Treetops Trails & Private Walks – Exclusive Use Guaranteed.

Written By: Treetops - 01 Jan, 2026

Treetops Lodge & Estate, New Zealand’s only privately owned 2500-acre nature reserve, offers exclusive use of 70 km (35 miles) of private estate trails and private walks. These walks are now available to self-guide using a simple downloadable ‘Treetops Walks’ app and website access in a partnership with ‘New Zealand Private Walks’. This enables Treetops guests to follow their chosen estate trail based on specific interests and fitness levels, and to identify flora, trees, and estate animals along the way – all while enjoying our best ecological and sustainable practices, plus our topography and interesting historical facts.

Treetops Trails are unprecedented in New Zealand and provide spectacular views, ancient rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes, seven trout fishing streams, and the opportunity to get close to the estate’s wildlife. All this is exclusively available to Treetops guests. Gourmet picnic backpack lunches can be arranged with our chef, and some trails can be used solely for the day – ensuring you will meet no other humans on that trail during your hike, only wildlife!

A downloadable app or web access, complimentary - can be found here, which highlights our top three of eleven hikes available at Treetops: greathikesapp.com/treetops

Set in the heart of Rotorua, New Zealand’s renowned therapeutic thermal and trout-fishing region, the nature estate features 99% evergreen native trees and tree ferns, found nowhere else on Earth. Many areas of the estate have never been developed, leaving a rich native bird life to be experienced. Every guest receives a map with guides to extensive, safe, self-guided walks. It details native flora, fauna, and birds and identifies the wildlife that might be seen. Enjoy native birdwatching, observing deer or buffalo herds, and discovering indigenous herbs and foods used by the Māori for cooking and medicinal purposes. Ask about our gourmet backpack lunches, too!

There is a choice of eleven in total Treetops graded trails - graded A to C (easy, moderate, and difficult) with lengths from 1.5 to 4 hours, with hikes combinable (although our app features our most popular three). To help plan the route, the Treetops Guide Map outlines key features of each walk, describes the route, and provides crossing information.

The three most popular hikes are:

  • Bridal Veil Falls (Featured on App) is a must; this short 1 - 2 hour walk (graded A ) takes in a spectacular waterfall in summer, a perfect swimming hole. The hike mainly involves walking through the forest and crossing several bridges over streams.

  • Stairway to Heaven (Featured on App) and Dream Stream Trail (graded B) for moderate fitness takes 2-3 hours. It offers a variety of habitats, from mature forests to one of the last remaining native Rimu tree groves. It is extremely picturesque with waterfalls, streams, and wildlife. On return, stop for a swim in Treetops Lake.

  • Discovery Trail Loop (Featured on App) (graded C) is 4 hours long and suitable for the fit and adventurous. It is steep but offers spectacular views and is most likely to encounter wildlife. After this one, you might want to hit the Hot Tub!

At day’s end, after a hot soak in an ‘under the forest’ wooden jacuzzi tub in our Forest Spa, our team of dedicated chefs will create a dining experience embracing the Treetops ‘Estate to Plate’ philosophy, featuring ingredients reared or grown on this vast estate that is near 100% pesticide free.

The fare includes world-class game and trout, highlights estate-grown fruit and vegetables, plus unique native herbs from the forest. To accompany, select from a superb wine cellar of New Zealand and world wines, with expert advice on the best possible matches.
